Millie Bobby Brown has spoken out against the “disturbing” conversations surrounding her appearance

after facing criticism for looking “old” at the recent premiere of “The Electric State.”
The 21-year-old actress addressed the controversy in a heartfelt video shared on Instagram,
where she expressed frustration over public scrutiny and the unrealistic expectations placed on her.

Brown, who began her career at just 10 years old, reflected on the challenges of growing up in the spotlight

and how some people seem unable to accept her natural transition into adulthood.

“I want to take a moment to address something that I think is bigger than just me—something that affects every young woman who grows up under public scrutiny,”
the “Stranger Things” star began. “I started in this industry when I was 10 years old. I grew up in front of the world, and for some reason, people can’t seem to grow with me.”
Brown emphasized that many still expect her to look as she did during the early seasons of “Stranger Things,” but as she has evolved, she has become a target for unwarranted criticism. The actress condemned the ongoing discussion about her appearance, particularly from journalists and media outlets that have dissected her looks.
“The fact that adult writers are spending their time analyzing my face, my body, my choices—it’s disturbing,” Brown stated, adding that it is even more disappointing when women contribute to such narratives. She called out the tendency of some people to struggle with the idea of a girl growing into a woman on her own terms rather than conforming to external expectations.
“I refuse to apologize for growing up. I refuse to make myself smaller to fit the unrealistic expectations of people who can’t handle seeing a girl become a woman,” she asserted.

The actress made it clear that she would not be shamed for her appearance, her style, or the way she presents herself. She also urged people to shift their focus from criticism to support and encouragement.
“We have become a society where it’s so much easier to criticize than it is to pay a compliment,” she noted before calling on everyone to “do better.”
Brown concluded her message by extending her stance beyond her personal experience, emphasizing that her words apply to all young women who face scrutiny simply for growing up.
“Not just for me, but for every young girl who deserves to grow up without fear of being torn apart for simply existing,” she stated.

This is not the first time Brown has spoken out against the intense public scrutiny of her looks. Following the “Electric State” premiere, where she attended with her husband, Jake Bongiovi, she indirectly addressed the criticism by sharing a screenshot of a British Vogue article titled: “No One Cares How Old You Think Millie Bobby Brown Looks.”
Speculation has also swirled that Brown underwent a dramatic transformation to position herself for a role in a potential Britney Spears biopic. Her recent platinum blonde makeover, unveiled weeks before her 21st birthday, sparked comparisons to the pop icon. However, Brown has remained unfazed by the rumors and criticism, standing firm in her right to change and evolve as she pleases.
Back in December 2024, the actress faced another wave of judgment when social media users compared her appearance to that of a “40-year-old Jersey housewife.” At the time, Brown swiftly shut down the remarks with a pointed Instagram Story post, writing, “Women grow!! Not sorry about it :).”
Despite the constant commentary, Brown continues to advocate for self-acceptance and confidence, setting an example for young women everywhere. Her latest response serves as a powerful reminder that personal growth and transformation should be embraced rather than scrutinized.
